DX: Radio Station Spotting – August 2017

Some radio stations I’ve spotted at Helsinki, Finland with my Tecsun PL-600 (and six metre tall home made monopole antenna).

5th AUGUST:

UNID @ 6305 kHz (Free/Pirate radio). From 21:55 UTC and played e.g. Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Middle Of The Road. SINPO: 35322. (According to IrishPaul & Terry’sRadioBlog this was Radio Quadzilla).

6th AUGUST:

UNID @ 6267 kHz (Free/Pirate radio). From 20:07 UTC and played e.g. We Are The Champions by The Queen and Take Me Home Country Roads by ? (a disco version). Signed off at 20:25 UTC but back on the air at 20:28 UTC with weaker signal. SINPO: 45433. Good reception. (According to IrishPaul & Terry’sRadioBlog this was Radio Mustang).

UNID @ 6284 kHz (Free/Pirate radio). From 20:40 UTC. SINPO: 15221. Quite weak reception. Couldn’t hear any specific songs or ID. (According to IrishPaul & Terry’sRadioBlog this was FRS Holland).

Reflections Europe @ 6295 kHz. From 21:05 UTC. SINPO: 15221. Also quite weak reception. A religious station I guess?

VOA1 @ 5285 kHz. From 21:38 UTC and played e.g. Everybody’s Talking by Harry Nilsson. An odd frequency for VOA? SINPO: 35333.

Radio Rebelde @ 5025 kHz. From 3:50 UTC. Spanish talking + hit songs I guess. SINPO: 24332.

Laser Hot Hits (Free/Pirate radio) @ 6220 kHz. From 20:30 UTC. English talking + playing e.g. Abracadabra by Steve Miller Band, news at 21:00, at 21:10 UTC Imagine by John Lennon, at 21:13 UTC, 21:26 UTC Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes, 21:30 UTC speaking about Radio Caroline + The Day The Music Died (to the tune of American Pie) by Michael Robinson, 21:37 UTC radio jingles, 21:39 UTC (song ?) by Nik Kershaw, 21:48 UTC I think I heard the station ID, 21:52 UTC “all hits radio”. SINPO: 44343.

Radio Habana Cuba @ 6000 kHz, from 4:00 UTC. News and nice Cuban music + Mailbag Show. Later a short version of Quantanamera. SINPO: 35333.

Radio Deutches 700 @ 3985 kHz. Songs I could identify e.g. 3:42 UTC Physical by Olivia Newton-John, 4:00 UTC News in Deutsch (e.g. terrorist attack in Barcelona; Bayern München and Bayer Leverkusen mentioned), 4:06 UTC Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross, 4:11 UTC I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston, 4:22 UTC Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye by The Casinos. SINPO: 34433.

Radio Cairo @ 9800 kHz, 21:54 UTC English programme (something about pilotless aircrafts and aviation). SINPO: 24232.

Radio Belarus @ 3985 kHz, 22:02 UTC, German programme. SINPO: 45444.

26th AUGUST:

Johnny Tobacco (Free/Pirate Radio) @ 6285 kHz. 22:15 UTC Dutch or German polka song, 22:24 UTC Polka continues after couple of “ordinary” songs, 22:29 UTC Happy Birthday -song, then again polka, 22:32 UTC This is Johnny Tobacco, 22:34 UTC “Boogie-woogie” song,  SINPO: 25222. At first it was weak reception. Signal strength varied from 1-2. Then it got better.

27th AUGUST:

Voice of Report of the Week @ 9400 kHz. 16:30 UTC E-mails from listeners: Talking about Blue Öyster Cult, 16:33 UTC a song by Tears For Fears, 16:38 UTC a song by The Clash, 16:41 UTC more mails from listeners (one was a technical worker at a hospital), Talking about “From the Isle of Music” radio show, 16:45 UTC Constant Craving by K.D. Lang,  16:49 UTC a song called Limbo, 16:52 UTC e-mails from listeners (e.g. one was from Ireland), 16:56 UTC a song by Oasis. 17:00 UTC signing off. SINPO: 35333.
